Reacting to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s remarks on the India-China ties during the ‘Lex Fridman Podcast’ show, the Chinese Foreign Ministry on Monday said that the “positive remarks" on the relations between the two nations “are appreciated", according to a report.

“Prime Minister Modi’s recent positive remarks on China-India relations are appreciated," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said on Monday, Global Times reported.

Mao further said that being partners in mutual achievement and realising a “cooperative pas de deux of the dragon and the elephant is the only right choice for China and India".

In the second podcast of his political career aired on Sunday evening, the Prime Minister had weighed in on the India-China relations lately and said that differences between two neighbouring countries are natural but “our focus is to ensure that these differences don’t turn into disputes". PM Modi had emphasised dialogue over discord in his remarks on the podcast.

“That’s what we actively work towards," the Chinese Foreign Ministry said while reacting to the Prime Minister’s remarks.

“In October last year, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a significant meeting in Kazan, offering strategic direction for enhancing China-India relations. In recent months, both nations have actively worked to implement the key agreements reached by their leaders, bolstering exchanges and practical cooperation across various levels, leading to a series of positive developments," Mao said, as per Global Times.

What Did PM Modi Say On China?

During the podcast with the American AI researcher, who has so far interviewed key global figures such as Donald Trump, Elon Musk, Benjamin Netanyahu, and Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the Prime Minister said that India and China are working to restore the conditions to how they were before the 2020 border tensions.

“Slowly but surely, trust, enthusiasm, and energy will return. But of course, it will take some time, since there’s been a five-year gap. Our cooperation isn’t just beneficial, it’s also essential for global stability and prosperity. And since the 21st century is Asia’s century, we want India and China to compete in a healthy and natural way. Competition is not a bad thing, but it should never turn into conflict," PM Modi said.

The Prime Minister also stressed on dialogue over discord to build a “stable cooperative relationship" between the two nations.

“Our relationship should remain just as strong in the future. It should continue to grow. Of course, differences are natural. When two neighboring countries exist, occasional disagreements are bound to happen. Even within a family, not everything is always perfect. But our focus is to ensure that these differences don’t turn into disputes. That’s what we actively work toward. Instead of discord, we emphasize dialogue, because only through dialogue can we build a stable cooperative relationship that serves the best interests of both nations," he said.
