An earthquake of magnitude 6 struck Myanmar on Tuesday, with strong tremors also felt in Kolkata and several parts of Bangladesh.
According to data from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the quake occurred about 70 miles east of Akyab in Myanmar.
The magnitude 6 earthquake was recorded 95 km west of Yenangyaung, Myanmar, at 9:04 pm local time on Tuesday. The tremor originated at a depth of 57 km, the EMSC said.
Myanmar was hit by a far more devastating earthquake in March last year when a 7.7-magnitude quake razed buildings, including high-rises, cut off power and destroyed bridges and roads across the country.
The epicentre of that temblor was near the city of Sagaing. Sagaing and Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city with more than 1.7 million residents, were among the worst affected.
State-run media outlets at the time reported that nearly 3,500 people were killed.
Years of internal conflict have left Myanmar’s economy and infrastructure in tatters. The military junta recently conducted elections, and the military-backed party secured a sweeping victory in the country’s three-phase general election held in late January.
