Elon Musk says China’s electricity generation, led by solar, will surpass America by 3X soon. At WEF Davos, he called solar the key to clean energy.

Elon Musk, Tesla and SpaceX CEO, highlighted that China’s electricity generation is growing superfast – with solar being the largest incremental contributor.

The Tesla boss further underlined that it will exceed America by a factor of 3X “either this year or next". In a post on ‘X’, Musk wrote, “China electricity generation is still growing super fast, with solar being the largest incremental contributor, and will exceed America by a factor of 3X either this year or next".

He had cited a report that highlighted that the scale of China’s energy grid is “insanely large and highly increasing".

“In 2025, they held 33.2% of the global electricity generation, more than double that of the USA (~14.2%)", the report said.

“That’s 1/3 of the world’s capacity. Then the rest of the World combined ends up with 52.6%. An absolute dominant force in global power generation", it added.

Elon Musk, the world’s richest man and potentially the first-ever trillionaire, made a surprise appearance at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

In an interview with BlackRock CEO Larry Fink, he went candid on his views on the future of EVs, AI, and clean energy.

The Tesla CEO described solar energy as the linchpin of the world’s clean-power potential; at the same time, he highlighted that “tariff barriers for solar are extremely high in the United States".

Musk added that the United States could meet its national electricity requirements with only a small piece of the land in the Southwest.

“You could take a small corner of Utah, Nevada or New Mexico… to generate all of the electricity that the US uses," he said.
