Tech billionaire Elon Musk on Tuesday took a swipe at Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, suggesting he should be offered amnesty to bring Ukraine “back to democracy".

Musk made the remark on the social media platform X, which he owns, while agreeing with a user’s post that criticised Zelenskyy as a “dictator." His comment was a response to a post accusing the Ukrainian president of holding onto power at the expense of his people.

“As distasteful as it is, Zelensky should be offered some kind of amnesty in a neutral country in exchange for a peaceful transition back to democracy in Ukraine," Musk wrote.

The user whose post caught the attention of the Tesla and SpaceX owner claimed that Zelenskyy would lose power if the war ended. The post further accused Zelenskyy of sending “innocent Ukrainians to die in his meat grinder" to maintain his grip on power.

“Zelensky knows if the war ends, his power ends. Elections will resume and he’ll lose. Then his adversary will investigate his money laundering and he’ll be sent to prison. Zelensky is sending innocent Ukrainians to die in his meat grinder so he can stay in power. Dictator," the user’s post read.

Musk’s comments appear to echo those of US President Donald Trump, who recently called Zelenskyy a “dictator" and claimed that Zelenskyy “refused to have elections" in Ukraine. Trump made these remarks last month, just before his tense Oval Office meeting with the Ukrainian leader last Friday, which grabbed global attention.

Zelenskyy is facing increasing scrutiny because his five-year term was due to end in May 2024, but elections in Ukraine have been postponed due to the ongoing war with Russia, following the country’s declaration of martial law after Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022.
