A Pakistani man has been charged with murder for allegedly shooting dead a WhatsApp group administrator after he was removed from the chat. Police reported that Mushtaq Ahmed was shot and killed on Thursday evening (March 6) in Peshawar, the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

A man named only as Ashfaq has been charged with his murder, according to police documents seen by AFP and a local police official.

The incident took place reportedly after Mushtaq allegedly kicked Ashfaq out of the WhatsApp group following an argument, according to a statement by Mushtaq’s brother.

Mushtaq’s brother further said that both parties had arranged to meet and reconcile but alleges that Ashfaq turned up with a gun and opened fire, killing his brother. Ashfaq was angry “in reaction to removal from WhatsApp group," according to his statement.

“My slain brother Mushtaq and Ashfaq had developed some differences in a WhatsApp group, forcing my brother to remove the latter. Ashfaq got infuriated and shot my brother dead," the brother said. “It was a non-issue or a very trivial matter. No one in our family even knew about the dispute at all."

Abid Khan, a local police officer, said the brother of the deceased had lodged a complaint with police, accusing Ashfaq of fatally shooting Ahmed. Abid said the suspect fled the scene after shooting Ahmed dead and police were conducting raids to apprehend him.

The availability of firearms, the influence of tribal customs, and sometimes weak law enforcement contribute to the frequency of such incidents in Pakistan.

The incident sparked widespread condemnation on social media. “Unbelievable! What have we come to? Taking lives over digital spaces? This is beyond madness," a person said on X. “This is really scary," wrote another person.

India has also seen its share of deadly WhatsApp fights. In 2023, an admin was shot at by three men in Gurugram after they were removed from a WhatsApp group for posting abusive comments. They were later arrested.
