Ex-boyfriend shoots teen in Germany school attack, kills man who tried to stop him

A 19-year-old man shot his 18-year-old ex-girlfriend at a school in Germany on Thursday before killing a 30-year-old man who tried to stop him, according to local media reports. The attacker was detained after the violence at the school in Gosen-Neu Zittau, in Brandenburg's Oder-Spree district, German newspaper Markische Allgemeine Zeitung (MAZ) reported.

The 18-year-old victim was a secondary school student, while the second victim, aged 30, died after attempting to intervene and stop the shooter. It is unclear whether the 19-year-old suspect was a student at the school or why he targeted his ex-girlfriend.

SUSPECT ARRESTED AFTER SHOOTING

A spokesperson for the East Police Directorate confirmed to MAZ that police and emergency services arrived at about 1:45 PM (local time) following reports of an active shooter. Brandenburg police deployed a large contingent to the area and secured the school grounds. Firefighters and numerous ambulances were also sent to the scene, while two rescue helicopters were requested.

Emergency crews erected screens in the schoolyard to shield the scene from view and protect the privacy of those involved. Police continued to issue warnings and information through their official channels as the operation remained underway.

Initial reports indicated that the shooting took place at a campus of the Docemus private schools in Neu Zittau. The campus opened in 2008 and provides several educational options, including a Gymnasium, a secondary school and a vocational high school.

Authorities have yet to release further details about the circumstances surrounding the shooting or the relationship between the suspect and the teenage victim. The investigation is ongoing.
