Former US President Bill Clinton and his wife former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said they would not testify before the House Oversight Committee, accusing Republicans of using congressional powers to punish political opponents rather than pursue the truth. In a sharply worded letter addressed to House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer, the Clintons said they were prepared to “fight" what they described as a partisan campaign against them, even if it led to contempt proceedings.

“Every person has to decide when they have seen or had enough and are ready to fight for this country, its principles and its people, no matter the consequences," the Clintons wrote, adding, “For us, now is that time."

The response came after James Comer said his committee would move to hold Bill Clinton in contempt of Congress for failing to appear for a deposition related to his past association with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The Clintons were summoned by the committee in August last year as part of a broader investigation into Jeffrey Epstein’s network and the federal government’s handling of related cases.

James Comer said no one was accusing Bill Clinton of criminal wrongdoing but argued that lawmakers had unanswered questions. Bill Clinton’s relationship with Jeffrey Epstein, which dates back to the 1990s, has been well documented, though none of Jeffrey Epstein’s survivors have accused the former US President of abuse. Bill Clinton has repeatedly denied any knowledge of Jeffrey Epstein’s sex trafficking activities.

In their letter, the Clintons accused James Comer of selectively enforcing subpoenas and failing to conduct a meaningful investigation. They said the committee had interviewed only two witnesses since launching its probe, despite issuing multiple subpoenas.

“The facts speak for themselves," they wrote, adding, “You subpoenaed eight people in addition to us. You dismissed seven of those eight without any of them saying a single word to you."

The Clintons also said legal analyses prepared by two law firms concluded that the subpoenas issued to them were legally invalid and challenged James Comer to make those findings public.

“We call on you to release that analysis so the American people can see how this is yet another example of the casual disregard for the law," the letter said.

Anticipating contempt proceedings, the Clintons accused James Comer of attempting to embarrass them rather than uncover facts.

“We expect you will release irrelevant, decades-old photos that you hope will embarrass us," they wrote, adding that the committee was more focused on punishment than governance.

The letter warned that pushing ahead with contempt proceedings could paralyse Congress and distract from pressing national issues.

“This is not the way out of America’s ills," the Clintons said, pledging to defend themselves publicly and politically.
