FBI director Kash Patel has ordered the firing of at least six agents linked to a 2022 investigation into US President Donald Trump retaining classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago residence, US media reported on Wednesday.
The move has drawn criticism from the association representing bureau personnel.
The FBI raided Trump’s Florida residence in 2022, when he was out of office, as part of an investigation into the alleged mishandling of classified documents following his first White House term. The case included secret Pentagon and CIA records but was later dropped.
Trump has denied any wrongdoing. In July 2024, US District Judge Aileen Cannon, a Trump appointee, dismissed the documents case, ruling that former special counsel Jack Smith had been unlawfully appointed. The US Justice Department appealed but ultimately dropped the case after Trump won the November 2024 presidential election and returned to office.
The FBI Agents Association confirmed that the firings had taken place, without specifying the exact number. The group condemned the decision, saying it violated “the due process rights of those who risk their lives to protect the United States."
“These actions weaken the Bureau by stripping away critical expertise and destabilizing the workforce, undermining trust in leadership and jeopardizing the Bureau’s ability to meet its recruitment goals — ultimately putting the nation at greater risk," the association said in a statement.
Reports said the firings took place on the same day Patel claimed that authorities had obtained his phone records in connection with Trump-related probes conducted under the Biden administration, when he was not leading the agency.
