Just days after taking a swipe at London Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan, US President Donald Trump has now directed criticism towards former First Minister of Scotland, Nicola Sturgeon. Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Wednesday, July 30, as he returned to the US, Trump labelled Sturgeon as a “terrible First Minister".

The former US President made the remarks while praising Scotland’s current First Minister, John Swinney, whom he described as having “done a very good job". Trump also hinted at private discussions and a dinner shared with Swinney during his recent visit to Scotland.

When asked by reporters about his meeting with the current SNP leader, Trump downplayed any serious policy discussions. “No, we really didn’t discuss it much," he said, referring to issues like US tariffs on Scotch whisky. “But I have a lot of respect for him."

However, Trump couldn’t resist a dig at Swinney’s predecessor. Interrupting further questions from journalists, he added, “I didn’t have a lot of respect for the woman that preceded him. I thought she was terrible as a First Minister of Scotland."

Nicola Sturgeon, never one to shy away from a rebuttal, responded on social media. “Feeling was mutual, Donnie. Forever proud to represent all the things that offend your view of the world," she wrote, taking a clear swipe at Trump’s worldview.

According to PA Media, a source close to Sturgeon added, “Trump’s lack of respect for women is hardly news. That said, the feeling was entirely mutual."

Sturgeon, whose memoir Frankly is set to be published next month, also commented wryly on Trump’s criticism. In another post, she quipped that she was “raging" she couldn’t use Trump’s “endorsement" as a quote for the book’s front cover.

This is not the first time Trump has publicly criticised Sturgeon. Upon her resignation in 2023, he called her a “failed woke extremist" and a “crazed leftist" who “symbolises everything wrong with identity politics".

Sturgeon, for her part, has long made her opposition to Trump clear. After his victory in the 2016 US Presidential election, she described his rhetoric and behaviour as “abhorrent".
