Former Indian Ambassador to the US Taranjit Singh Sandhu on Wednesday called Donald Trump’s victory in the 2024 US presidential election as “historic" and expressed optimism for the future of India-US relations under his leadership.

“Better times are ahead for India-US partnership. India and its leadership will play a critical role. We should celebrate that Indian-Americans have arrived," Sandhu said in an interview with CNN-News18.

While acknowledging potential trade challenges in the short term, Sandhu noted that these issues would eventually be resolved.

He further emphasised that, in the long run, the relationship between the two countries would deepen, particularly in areas like information technology (IT), defence, and other strategic sectors.

Energy, Education Sectors To Grow Under New Admin

Sandhu, who joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) earlier in March, also highlighted the growing collaboration in energy and education, predicting that these sectors would expand further under the new Trump administration.

He added that Trump would focus on tackling illegal immigration, which has been a key issue in his political agenda.

Trump, the former president and now president-elect of the United States, secured victory in the presidential race and is set to return to the White House.

The Republican candidate won 276 electoral votes, while his rival, Democrat candidate Kamala Harris, had 219 votes. The final count is still underway, as per CNN report.
