Indian-American Democratic Congressman Shri Thanedar, who was re-elected from Michigan District 13 in the US House of Representatives, weighed in on the presidential elections, where Republican former President Donald Trump defeated Vice President Kamala Harris to stage an unprecedented comeback for a second term at the White House.
In an exclusive interview with CNN-News18, Thanedar praised Trump for better articulating the issues the US was facing in terms of the economy, inflation and illegal immigration at the borders. On the other hand, Thanedar said Harris looked like an “elite candidate" who stuck to her position of not doing anything different than the previous president.
“The people who are trying to make ends meet they struggling to put food on the table. They are struggling to pay for medicine. They have to make hard choices, whether they have to use the money to buy medicine or provide heat in their homes or buy their groceries. $100 isn’t bringing today the amount of groceries that they used to be able to bring four years ago," he said.
‘If You Are Struggling With Economy…’: Thanedar On Harris
Thanedar criticised Harris for saying that she would not do anything different than what President Joe Biden had done. “Harris was looked at as a little more of an elite candidate. A candidate that was supported by all the celebrities you know, and she was someone that was saying that she would not do anything different than what President Biden did," he told CNN-News18.
“If you are sitting at home, worrying about your finances, if you’re sitting at home, struggling with the economy, if you’re still sitting at home and seeing this inflation and here is a presidential candidate who saying she’s not gonna do anything differently," the Indian-American Congressman further said.
What Trump Did Better Than Harris? Thanedar Weighs In
Thanedar praised Trump for properly articulating the three main issues in the United States. “He talked about the cost. He talked about inflation, the rising interest rates and then he talked about the migration at the borders. People coming in undocumented, and then he said somelike like the people are eating dogs and cats, but it stuck in," he mentioned.
“It stuck in that there is a safety issue in America and that is attached to the immigrants migrating, and then he also talked about world events… They warned about the wars in Ukraine and Gaza and he said when he was president, they did not have wars. We didn’t have this kind of war and stability in the world, like Iran attacking Israel, so he articulated these three issues, and he did that very, very well," Thanedar added.
What Went Wrong With Harris?
Kamala Harris’ run for the White House ended in heartbreak as she faltered in swing states, as she would have been the first female US President. She is the second female rival Trump has defeated in a presidential election. Harris, a late entrant in the election race, had initially galvanised Democrats as many high-profile celebrities and businessmen backed her bid.
However, she was unable to convince disillusioned voters that she represented a break from Biden’s unpopular administration in a compressed timeline. On the other hand, Trump stuck to his usual strategy to channel the frustration of the voters into his victory by highlighting issues of high prices and rising crime due to undocumented migrants entering on Biden’s watch. His harsh tone and language, though shocking several Democrats and Republicans, appeared to have worked.
