France has launched an investigation into allegations by government ministers and human rights groups that Elon Musk’s AI chatbot made statements denying the Holocaust.

In reply to a now-deleted post by a post by a convicted French Holocaust denier and neo-Nazi militant, Grok on Monday published several false claims that stated Nazi Germany did not murder 6 million Jews during the second World War.

According to The Guardian, the chatbot said in French that the gas chambers at the Nazi death camp Auschwitz-Birkenau were “designed for disinfection with Zyklon B against typhus, featuring ventilation systems suited for this purpose, rather than for mass executions".

It also claimed that the “narrative" that the chambers were used for “repeated homicidal gassings" continued “due to laws suppressing reassessment, a one-sided education and a cultural taboo that discourages the critical examination of evidence".

The post was later deleted.

However, Grok’s post was condemned by the Auschwitz Memorial in Poland saying, “We remind @grok that denying the Holocaust violates the regulations of @X. SS documents, survivor and witness testimonies, as well as photographs taken by the resistance, provide unequivocal evidence that these were gas chambers where people were murdered en masse with Zyklon B."

“Preserved sources confirm the existence of ventilation systems used to remove hydrogen cyanide, which allowed for the rapid airing of the chambers after the mass killing of people had been carried out," it further stated.

“Denial of the existence of gas chambers is a disgraceful assault on the memory of all those people: Jews, Poles, Roma, Soviet prisoners of war, and all other victims. It is also a slap in the face to those prisoners who risked their lives to document and convey the truth about German crimes, as well as to the Survivors who still bear the trauma of their personal experiences," the museum added.

The Guardian quoted Paris public prosecutor’s office as saying on Wednesday that it was expanding an existing inquiry into Musk’s social media platform to include the “Holocaust-denying comments", which remained online for three days.

Three French ministers – Lescure, Anne Le Hénanff and Aurore Bergé, said late on Wednesday they had reported “manifestly illegal content published by Grok on X" to the prosecutor under article 40 of France’s criminal code.

Besides, the French Human Rights League (LDH) and the anti-discrimination group SOS Racisme said on Thursday that they too have filed complaints against Grok’s first post “disputing crimes against humanity".

The Paris public prosecutor’s office said: “Holocaust-denying comments shared by the artificial intelligence Grok, on X, have been included in the ongoing investigation being conducted by [this office’s] cybercrime division".

The Guardian quoted Nathalie Tehio, the LDH’s president, saying Musk’s responsibility as X’s owner was key since the platform was not moderating even “obviously illegal content".
