Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi has cautioned Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma against bringing his family and children into political rivalry, stating that such actions would not be tolerated.

Addressing a press conference, Gogoi began by saying: “The fear caused by the growing strength of the Congress party over the last six months was clearly reflected in yesterday’s (Sunday) press conference of the chief minister." Issuing a strong warning, Gogoi said the chief minister should refrain from making personal attacks involving family members. “I too know about your children, so do not force me," he said, adding that any issues involving children would be addressed legally after consultations with lawyers in Delhi.

“I am warning the chief minister for the second time—attack me as much as you want, I have the courage to tolerate it. I am from the lineage of Veer Lachit Barphukan and the son of late Tarun Gogoi. But if attacks are made on our party workers or common people, I will not remain silent. I will follow you everywhere."

Speaking on the delay in making the SIT report public, Gogoi alleged that the chief minister had already reviewed the report six months ago and stepped back after finding no evidence linking him to the ISI or any other organisation. He accused Sarma of misleading the public by claiming the report could not be released in September due to the death of singer Zubeen Garg. “The report was supposed to be made public on September 10, while Zubeen Garg passed away on September 19," Gogoi said.

The Congress leader further alleged that the SIT report was made public only to divert attention from land scam allegations against Sarma. “I actually liked that the ‘super flop film’ was made public. By approaching the court, we did not allow Sarma any excuse. Even after releasing the report, he could not provide a single piece of evidence," he added. On security concerns during public rallies, Gogoi said adequate security had not been provided to him, despite the need for protection for the Pradesh Congress president. “However, we are not afraid. We will continue to move forward with the people of Assam," he said.

Clarifying the purpose of the press conference, Gogoi stated that it was not organised to respond to the chief minister but to ensure that the people of Assam are not misled. Addressing questions about his visit to Pakistan, Gogoi said, “In June last year, I myself informed authorities in New Delhi about my visit to Pakistan. I went there with my wife, and all information is with the Modi government."

Responding to allegations regarding his wife’s links to Pakistan, Gogoi clarified that she did not receive any salary from the Pakistani government. “In 2012, my wife was working for an international NGO funded by the British and Netherlands governments. She went to Pakistan for official work. As her husband, I went to meet her—what is wrong with that?" he said. Gogoi added that he again visited Pakistan with his wife in 2014, with the Union government fully informed. “After returning, I submitted my passport to the central government," he stated. Gogoi called it nothing but political intrigue.

Reacting to Gogoi’s 10-day schedule where he said he went to Taxila, Sarma, in a message on X, said: “In today’s press conference, Gaurav Gogoi made a disclosure that even I was not previously aware of. Takshashila (Taxila) is not located in Islamabad, but in Rawalpindi District, Punjab. This single fact raises a serious and unavoidable question. If his Pakistan visa explicitly permitted travel only to Lahore, Karachi and Islamabad, how did he visit Takshashila, which lies outside the Islamabad Capital Territory and squarely within Rawalpindi District? Under Pakistan’s immigration rules, travel beyond visa-designated cities is not permitted without specific authorisation. So the question is simple, factual, and legitimate: Who facilitated his movement to Takshashila despite the apparent absence of visa clearance for Rawalpindi District? This question gains further significance given that Pakistan Army’s General Headquarters (GHQ)—the nerve centre of the Pakistani military—is also located in Rawalpindi."
