A heckler’s brief interruption at US President Donald Trump’s Texas rally turned into a spectacle of its own on Thursday, as the US President mocked the protester as he was escorted out, joked that he was “going back home to mom” and then accused protesters at his rallies of being paid by “enemies of our nation”.
Trump was addressing a campaign event for Republican candidates in San Antonio when the protester was removed by members of the crowd.
As the man was being escorted out, Trump said, “He’s going back home to mom right now,” before adding that the protester did not know his mother “voted for Trump”.
The President then took another swipe at the heckler’s appearance. “That guy’s got to lose a lot of weight,” Trump said, repeating the remark as the protester was taken away.
Trump soon shifted from mocking the individual heckler to making a broader claim about protesters at his rallies. “Many of these protesters are paid,” he said, alleging that they were “paid by enemies of our nation”.
Pointing to the signs carried by protesters, Trump said their uniform appearance and professional printing suggested they had been paid for. “These are paid protesters. They’re paid by enemies of our nation,” he said.
He then challenged any other paid protesters in the crowd to leave, telling them to “get the hell out of here”.
The interruption was brief, but footage circulating on social media showed a scuffle in the crowd as the protester was removed. The identity of the protester and the person who assaulted him on camera has not been established.
The episode unfolded as Trump campaigned for Republican candidates in Texas, 27 days before the November 3 midterm elections. Texas is a key arena for Republicans, with Senator Ken Paxton’s campaign among the contests the party is closely watching.
Trump also used the rally to attack his political opponents and promote Republican candidates, telling Paxton, “We’re going to see you soon in the Senate, Ken. You’re going to be helping us a lot.”
Speaking to a packed Freeman Coliseum, Trump also pledged to award retired baseball star Roger Clemens the Presidential Medal of Freedom and reiterated his support for the death penalty for drug dealers.
He also clarified recent remarks about the possibility of Iran bombing American cities, while repeating his argument that high fuel prices are “a small price to pay” for the war.
“You want to see problems? Let them hit San Diego, let them hit Los Angeles,” Trump said. “We’re not going to let that happen. We protect our cities. We protect our country.”
The heckling incident was not the first time a Trump rally has been interrupted by protesters, with the President frequently responding to disruptions from the stage. The White House has not yet commented on the incident.
