Google has delayed the rollout of third-party autofill support on Chrome for Android. Originally scheduled for Chrome 131 in November last year, the feature is now expected to launch with Chrome 135 in April.

Last October, Google revealed its plan to enable direct form filling on websites by integrating native support for third-party password managers in Chrome 131. However, following developer feedback, the company has decided to delay the release.

“Reflecting on feedback from autofill service developers, we’ve decided to shift the schedule to include third-party autofill services in Chrome 135," Google developer advocate Eiji Kitamura commented on the Android Developers Blog.

By eliminating the need for extensions or workarounds, this change seeks to enhance user experience and security by enabling direct integration of third-party password managers or autofill services.

Since the original announcement, Google has made many improvements:

Checking Chrome Preferences: Autofill services can now check Chrome’s preferences to see if users have enabled third-party autofill.

Deep Linking: Third-party autofill can now be easily enabled by users by having services link straight to Chrome settings.

Meanwhile, Google has updated the rollout timetable to take developer input into account and make the required modifications:

– The beta version of Chrome 135 is released on March 5, 2025.

– The stable release of Chrome 135 is scheduled for April 1, 2025.

– Compatibility mode will be phased off in the summer of 2025.

To preserve the autofill feature, users will need to manually enable “Autofill using another service" in Chrome settings. Autofill service providers should instruct their users on how to toggle this setting for the best results.

Google has also stated that, as part of their continuous upgrade policy, Chrome’s compatibility mode—which permits access to earlier versions of Chrome and alters the layout of web pages—will be withdrawn after the summer of 2025.
