Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong on Thursday called his nation’s ties with India “important", while pointing to the “great uncertainty and turbulence" in the world. Lawrence, who arrived in New Delhi on Tuesday for a three-day visit, said that the bilateral partnership is rooted in shared values, mutual respect and a deep reservoir of trust.

Although Lawrence did not name any country, it is clear that US President Donald Trump’s tariff threats have pushed the world into an era of “uncertainty."

Trump has imposed 50% tariffs on India over the sale and purchase of Russian oil and a standard 10% on goods imported from Singapore.

Addressing the press meet at Hyderabad House in New Delhi with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Lawrence said India and Singapore can strengthen resilience together, seize new opportunities and contribute to stability and growth in the region and beyond.

“In a world marked by great uncertainty and turbulence, the partnership between India and Singapore becomes even more important because this is a partnership rooted in shared values, mutual respect and a deep reservoir of trust. We can draw strength from our shared history and the friendship and trust between our peoples… I look forward to working hand in hand with Prime Minister Modi to bring the Singapore-India partnership to even greater heights in the years ahead," he said.

The Singapore PM also pointed out that both nations will broaden their partnership and expand cooperation in frontier areas like space. “To date, more than 20 Singapore-made satellites have been launched by India. Through the MoU on promoting collaboration in the space sector, we will broaden this partnership and push the boundaries of what we can achieve together," he added.

Lawrence underlined that Singapore, being the largest foreign investor in India, accounts for around a quarter of India’s foreign direct investment inflows.

Lawrence said he had a fruitful discussion with PM Modi on they we can take the India-Singapore comprehensive strategic partnership forward.
