Elections have been announced in Bangladesh for February 12, but this is the first time the Awami League has been fully barred from participating in the process. News18 spoke exclusively with Sajeeb Wazed, son of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, regarding the upcoming polls. Sajeeb alleged that the elections will be “totally rigged" and further claimed that Pakistan is involved in the developments. He also alleged that Muhammad Yunus is preparing to flee to France.

How do you view the February 12 election announcement?

This is going to be a rigged election, with the largest political party and the third-largest party banned from contesting. Not only the Awami League, but also parties such as the Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal and the Workers Party have been barred. It is a complete mockery of democracy.

What will the Awami League do now?

Our supporters have already begun small protest marches. We will organise larger demonstrations as well. We will fight this politically.

What is your reaction to the Bangladesh President’s recent comments?

It is only natural. If elections take place, he will have to step down.

Do you think Muhammad Yunus is trying to become President?

No. I believe Yunus is trying to sell his businesses in Bangladesh and transfer his funds through Azerbaijan. He plans to leave the country and settle in France, where he owns a home. The Azerbaijan President’s daughter recently made a private trip to Dhaka and met him.

Do you think foreign forces are involved?

Pakistan is definitely involved. The Azerbaijan angle is also extremely serious. Yunus is laundering his money.

What is the future of Bangladesh if this election proceeds?

Bangladesh will become an Islamist state under Jamaat-e-Islami if a rigged election is allowed to take place.

Who is the Awami League’s biggest enemy—Jamaat or BNP?

Jamaat, without question. The BNP is a political opponent, not an enemy. Jamaat opposes an independent Bangladesh and wants to turn it into a terrorist state.
