Manmohan Singh, India’s economist-turned-Prime Minister, known for his grace, soft-spoken demeanor and sharp economic vision, earned praise from his rivals and colleagues on several occasions.
Manmohan Singh, the architect of India’s economic reforms, died in Delhi on Thursday night. He was 92.
Singh’s death was announced by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhi, where he was admitted in the Emergency ward at around 8.30 PM in a critical condition.

“I remember during the voting in the House, it was known that the treasury bench would win but Dr Manmohan Singh came on his wheelchair and cast his vote. This is an example of a member being alert of his duties. He was an inspirational example," PM Modi said, referring to the vote Manmohan Singh cast over a key legislation.
In August 2023, Dr. Singh participated in a parliamentary debate on a bill that sought to grant the central government greater authority over Delhi’s administrative matters, arriving in a wheelchair.
He also made his way in a wheelchair to cast his vote during the Presidential elections.
‘Country Indebted To Him’
Union Minister Nitin Gadkari in 2022 also said that the nation will remain indebted to the former prime minister.
“Liberal economy ke karan desh ko nayee disha mili, uske liye Manmohan Singh Ka desh reeni hai (The country is indebted to Manmohan Singh for the liberalisation that gave a new direction)," Gadkari said.
He recalled that he could raise money to build roads in Maharashtra when he was a minister in Maharashtra in the mid-1990s due to economic reforms initiated by the former prime minister.
