The discovery of the mutilated body of a woman in a trash bin in Istanbul has triggered anger and protests from women’s rights groups. The body, wrapped in a sheet, was found on Saturday evening in the Sisli district.

A paper collector, who was searching bins for recyclable items, alerted the authorities after making the discovery, Turkish news agency DHA reported.

The police later identified the victim as a 37-year-old woman from Uzbekistan. Her head and legs had been cut off and were not found at the scene.

According to the investigators cited by AFP, the body showed clear signs of extreme violence.

The police reviewed the CCTV footage of the area and noticed two men leaving a suitcase in another rubbish bin nearby. It was not immediately known what was inside the suitcase.

The incident has sparked outrage among women’s rights organisations, which announced protest marches in Istanbul and Ankara at 4:00 PM (1300 GMT) to demand action against the killings of women.

“We don’t yet know the murdered woman’s name, but we know this crime is the result of male violence!" the group Feminists Against Femicide wrote on X. The organisation said it would “take our anger to the streets so that not one more is lost".
