At least 25 Mexican Guard members and one security guard were killed following the capture and death of infamous cartel boss Nemesio Oseguera, alias “El Mencho," on Sunday.

AFP quoted security secretary Omar Garcia Harfuch saying that a prison guard, a member of the state prosecutor’s office and 30 members of Oseguera’s criminal organization were also killed in the unrest.

El Mencho’s death triggered “27 cowardly attacks against authorities in Jalisco," Reuters quoted Harfuch saying at the president’s daily press conference. At least 70 people were arrested in seven states.

“We are closely monitoring for any kind of reaction or restructuring within the cartel that could lead to violence," he said.

According to CNN, citing Mexico’s defence ministry, the 59-year-old leader of the powerful Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) was seriously injured during a clash with security forces in the town of Tapalpa. He later died while being airlifted to Mexico City.

After the news of the killing of the powerful kingpin of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel broke out, the cartel members launched retaliatory attacks across Jalisco and neighbouring states.

More than 20 roads were blocked with burning vehicles, bringing key highways to a standstill. Violence also spread to Michoacán and the tourist city of Puerto Vallarta. In Guadalajara, businesses were shut down and residents were urged to stay indoors as plumes of smoke rose over parts of the city.

Oseguera had been one of the world’s most wanted criminals, with the United States offering a $15 million reward for information leading to his capture. His cartel, known for its military-style tactics and brutal expansion, had grown into one of Mexico’s most dominant criminal organisations since its formation in 2009.

On Monday, US President Donald Trump in a social media post called on Mexico to boost its efforts targeting drug cartels. “Mexico must step up their effort on Cartels and Drugs!" he wrote.

Earlier in the day, President Claudia Sheinbaum urged the citizens to remain calm and stay well-informed about the matter. “Most important thing to guarantee peace and security of country. Our condolences to families of officers who lost their lives yesterday. People should be VERY PROUD of our armed forces."
