“I can do anything I want,” President Donald Trump declared in his first response to a landmark ruling by the Supreme Court striking down his global tariffs on Friday — a judgment that dealt a significant blow to his second-term trade agenda.
Speaking from the White House, a visibly frustrated Trump insisted he still had “methods that are even stronger” at his disposal. He also expressed sharp criticism of the justices behind the decision, calling the verdict “deeply disappointing.”
In response to the setback, Trump signed an order imposing a 10 per cent global tariff under Section 122, in addition to existing duties. He further revealed that his administration would initiate several Section 301 and other investigations aimed at addressing what he described as unfair trading practices by foreign nations.
In a 6-3 ruling, the Supreme Court held that Trump’s reliance on emergency authority to levy import tariffs without congressional approval exceeded presidential powers and was therefore unlawful.
