Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Saturday praised the interaction between US President Donald Trump and New York City Mayor-Elect Zohran Mamdani, saying it reflected the spirit of a healthy democracy, one where political opponents fight hard during elections but cooperate once the mandate is clear.
Sharing his views on X, Tharoor wrote, “This is how democracy should work. Fight passionately for your point of view in elections, with no rhetorical holds barred. But once it’s over, and the people have spoken, learn to cooperate with each other in the common interests of the nation you are both pledged to serve."
He added that he would “love to see more of this in India" and was “trying to do his part" to foster such political civility.

The unexpected alliance between the two political rivals was first revealed by Trump, who announced on Truth Social that he would be meeting Mamdani at the Oval Office on November 21.
After labelling Mamdani with as “lunatic", “communist", “despot", among many others, Trump’s meeting with the historic winner of the New York mayoral elections went surprisingly well. In fact, the clashing duo called their meeting “productive".
“He really ran an incredible race against, you know, a lot of smart people, starting with the early primaries against some very tough people, very smart people. And he beat them and he beat them easily. And I congratulated him and we talked about some things in very strong common, like housing and getting housing built, and food, prices and the price of oil is coming way down," Trump said.
Mamdani agreed with the US President, “The meeting with the president and as he said, it was a productive meeting focused on a place of shared admiration and love, which is New York City, and the need to deliver affordability to New Yorkers," he said.
Mamdani was questioned about his earlier “fascist" remark directed at Trump, but before he could respond, Trump cut in, saying, “That’s OK, you can just say yes, OK? It’s easier. It’s easier than explaining it — I don’t mind."
The light-hearted moment brought laughter in the Oval Office.
