A day after announcing a 25% tariff on Indian imports, US President Donald Trump took to Truth Social to criticise India’s trade policies and its ties with Russia. In his post, Trump dismissed concerns over India’s relationship with Moscow, stating, “I don’t care what India does with Russia. They can take their dead economies down together, for all I care."

He claimed the US has done “very little business" with India due to its “very high" tariffs, calling them “among the highest in the World." Trump also lashed out at former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, warning him to “watch his words" and accusing him of “entering very dangerous territory."

Trump Announces 25% Tariffs

His new post came less than a day after he announced 25% tariffs on India and highlighted New Delhi’s defence partnership and energy ties with Moscow.  In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, Donald Trump cited India’s high tariffs, stringent non-monetary trade barriers and continued military and energy ties with Russia as the basis for the move.

While announcing the tariffs, Trump said that while India is considered a friend, the US has “done relatively little business with them" due to what he described as excessively high tariffs and “the most strenuous and obnoxious non-monetary Trade Barriers of any Country."

He also criticised India’s continued reliance on Russian military equipment and energy imports, especially “at a time when everyone wants Russia to STOP THE KILLING IN UKRAINE." Declaring these actions “not good," Trump announced that India would face a 25% tariff along with an additional penalty, effective August 1. “THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER. MAGA!" he concluded.

‘Negotiations On’

After announcing 25% tariffs on Indian goods, US President Donald Trump appeared to have softened his stand and kept the doors open for negotiations with India over the trade agreement.

Calling Prime Minister Narendra Modi his friend, Trump said India doesn’t do much business in terms of business with the US. He also pointed out that India is a part of the BRICS, which he referred to as “a group of countries that are anti the United States."

When asked if he is open to negotiating with India on the tariffs, Trump said, “We are talking to them now. We will see what happens. India was the highest or just about the highest-tariff nation in the world…We will see. We are negotiating with India right now. They sell a lot to us, but we don’t buy from them…Because the tariff is so high. They have one of the highest tariffs in the world. Now, they are willing to cut it very substantially. But we will see what happens. We are talking to India now. We will see what happens. It doesn’t matter too much whether we have a deal or we charge them a certain tariff. But you will know at the end of this week…"

Trump On India’s Role In BRICS

Talking about concerns over global economic alliances, Trump pointed to India’s role in BRICS as a key reason for growing tensions. “Well, we’re negotiating right now, and it’s also BRICS. You know, they have BRICS, which is a group of countries that are anti-US, and India is a member of that… It’s an attack on the dollar, and we’re not going to let anybody attack the dollar," Trump said from the White House.

Trump has previously criticised the BRICS bloc, comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, accusing it of attempting to undermine the US dollar’s global dominance. He warned that any such move would trigger economic retaliation, including a possible 10 per cent tariff on all BRICS nations.

Why Trump Reacted To Former Russian President Medvedev

Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said in a post on X on Monday that U.S. President Donald Trump was playing “the ultimatum game" with Russia, and that such an approach could lead to a war involving the United States.

Medvedev wrote: “Each new ultimatum is a threat and a step towards war. Not between Russia and Ukraine, but with (Trump’s) own country."

Trump’s playing the ultimatum game with Russia: 50 days or 10… He should remember 2 things:1. Russia isn’t Israel or even Iran.2. Each new ultimatum is a threat and a step towards war. Not between Russia and Ukraine, but with his own country. Don’t go down the Sleepy Joe road!— Dmitry Medvedev (@MedvedevRussiaE) July 28, 2025

Trump said on Monday that he was disappointed in Russian President Vladimir Putin’s failure to end the war in Ukraine, and that he was reducing a deadline to agree a peace settlement from 50 days to 10 or 12.

Iran Accuses US Of Violating Sovereignty, Backs India

Iran has accused the United States of weaponising the global economy through its continued use of sanctions against sovereign nations like Iran and India. In a post on X, the Iranian government described these sanctions as coercive and discriminatory, claiming they are designed to suppress independent development and enforce American geopolitical interests.

“The United States continues to weaponise the economy and use #sanctions as tools to dictate its will on independent nations such as Iran and India and impede their growth and development," the post read, directly challenging Washington’s foreign policy approach.
