President Donald Trump, commenting on the renewed border clashes between Thailand and Cambodia on Monday, said, “It pains me to say this, but Cambodia and Thailand started today. Tomorrow I have to make a phone call, and I’m going to stop a war between two very powerful countries with just one phone call. We are creating peace through strength."
The fresh clashes have left several soldiers dead on both sides and triggered the displacement of tens of thousands, despite a US-brokered ceasefire.
The US State Department on Monday urged Thailand and Cambodia to halt renewed fighting along their shared border, warning that the escalating hostilities threaten to unravel a ceasefire agreement brokered earlier this year with the backing of former President Donald Trump.
In a statement, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the United States is “concerned" by the resurgence of violence. Clashes between Cambodian and Thai forces resumed on Sunday following a confrontation that left two Thai soldiers injured and triggered the displacement of tens of thousands of civilians living near the border.
Rubio called for the “immediate cessation of hostilities, the protection of civilians, and for both sides to return to the de-escalatory measures outlined in the October 26 Kuala Lumpur Peace Accords," which were signed by Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul.
The peace deal was reached under pressure from Trump, who had warned both Southeast Asian nations that trade privileges could be suspended if they failed to commit to de-escalation. Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim also played a key role in finalising the agreement.
The State Department said it continues to monitor the situation closely as humanitarian concerns mount.
