Pakistan’s Supreme Court on Thursday ordered an urgent medical evaluation of former Prime Minister Imran Khan after a report said he has lost 85% of vision in his right eye. Barrister Salman Safdar, appointed as amicus curiae, submitted a detailed report to the court after meeting Khan at Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail. The report states that Khan currently retains only 15% vision in his right eye.
A two-member bench comprising Chief Justice Yahya Afridi and Justice Shahid Bilal Hasan heard the matter. After reviewing the findings, the court directed the government to conduct a comprehensive medical examination, including a specialist ophthalmological review, before February 16.
The bench also instructed authorities to facilitate telephone contact between Khan and his sons, Qasim and Sulaiman, and allow access to his personal physicians.
MEDICAL FINDINGS PLACED BEFORE COURT
According to the report submitted by the amicus curiae, Khan had normal 6/6 vision in both eyes as recently as October 2025. He later began experiencing persistent blurred and hazy vision and allegedly raised repeated complaints with jail authorities.
The report states that Khan subsequently suffered a sudden and complete loss of vision in his right eye. An ophthalmologist at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) Hospital diagnosed a blood clot that caused severe damage. Despite treatment, including an injection, only 15% vision reportedly remains in the affected eye.
While the court declined a request to reassess a medical procedure conducted on January 24 at PIMS Hospital, Chief Justice Afridi observed that the health of a prisoner is the responsibility of the state and must be protected.
EMOTIONAL SCENES OUTSIDE COURT
Outside the courtroom, Imran Khan’s sister, Aleema Khan, was seen in tears after details of his deteriorating eye condition were discussed.
The case has drawn political attention, with leaders of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) present during the proceedings as legal and medical developments continue.
