The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has criticised the federal government’s decision to join the newly formed “Board of Peace", slamming the move as a betrayal of both democratic norms and the Palestinian cause. The party, founded by jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan, has accused the administration of Shehbaz Sharif of bypassing Parliament and compromising Pakistan’s sovereign foreign policy in a desperate bid for international legitimacy.
The PTI has expressed “grave concern" over the lack of transparency surrounding Pakistan’s induction into the Board. According to the party’s central leadership, a decision of such immense geopolitical significance should never have been made without a rigorous parliamentary debate or consultation with major political stakeholders.
The party’s statement was particularly dismissive of the current legislative assembly, asserting, “PTI does not recognise the legitimacy of the present Parliament, which was formed following the manipulated elections of 2024. However, the fact that even this hand-picked Parliament was bypassed in the decision-making process further erodes democratic norms and public trust."
PTI argues that any move involving international peace mechanisms must be rooted in national consensus and strict constitutional procedure—elements they claim are entirely absent from the Sharif government’s approach.
Turning to the international implications, the PTI has branded the “Board of Peace" a credibility-less entity. The party pointed out a glaring contradiction at the heart of the initiative: the inclusion of Israel as a member state while the Palestinian people remain entirely excluded from the process.
The party criticised the board for providing a platform to Israel even as “violence persists in the Gaza Strip and the occupied West Bank". The official statement warned that any peace mechanism devoid of Palestinian representation cannot be viewed as a diplomatic solution; it can “only be termed as an instrument of control".
The party reiterated that it stands firmly with the people of Palestine and will reject any plan or “imposed solution" that does not have the explicit consent of the Palestinian leadership and its people.
The statement saved its sharpest barbs for Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who attended the Board’s inaugural meeting in Washington this week. PTI accused the Prime Minister of making statements that “compromise Pakistan’s dignity" and depart from the country’s historically principled stance on supporting oppressed peoples.
The party has called on the government to return to an independent foreign policy that prioritises a just and lasting resolution through the establishment of an independent, sovereign Palestinian state.
