India, among friendly nations, helped Nepal after devastating floods, says PM Shah

Nepal Prime Minister Balendra Shah on Wednesday expressed gratitude to India, China, the US and several other countries for extending assistance to the flood-hit country, saying the support and solidarity from the international community were giving Nepal strength to deal with the devastating disaster.

Addressing Parliament, Shah said Nepal had been receiving messages of solidarity and goodwill from friendly countries through telephone calls, correspondence and social media. He said the support was providing encouragement to the country at a difficult time.

Shah said the international community had also extended assistance to areas affected by the floods. Aid has been received from India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, China, the US, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Singapore, Switzerland, South Korea, Japan and the UK, among other countries.

The Nepal government expressed gratitude to all supporting countries, international organisations and agencies involved in disaster relief efforts for their assistance.

Shah said the government considered the assistance from friendly nations and international organisations important in dealing with the crisis. He also said Nepal expected further support from the international community in the coming days.

The international assistance comes as Nepal continues rescue, relief and rehabilitation efforts following the devastating flood in the Bhotekoshi River on August 26.

Shah also briefed Parliament on the rescue, relief and rehabilitation measures being carried out by the government in response to the disaster.
