Sergio Gor, Donald Trump's nominee for US Ambassador to India, called New Delhi a strategic partner at his Senate confirmation.

US President Donald Trump and Sergio Gor are seen.
Donald Trump’s nominee for US Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee that India remains a “strategic partner" for the United States, as he emphasised on his commitment to strengthening bilateral ties if confirmed.
Appearing before the committee, Sergio Gor stressed that India is not simply a regional ally but a strategic partner across diplomacy, security, trade and shared values. He said his top priorities, if confirmed, would include rebuilding trust, addressing trade frictions and expanding cooperation in climate, defense and technology.
At the hearing, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio underlined the significance of the bilateral relationship, describing India as “one of the top relationships America has today in terms of the future of the world."
Who Is Sergio Gor?
Sergio Gor, 38, currently serves as director of the White House Presidential Personnel Office. Donald Trump announced his nomination on August 22, alongside an additional role for him as Special Envoy for South and Central Asian Affairs. A close aide to Donald Trump, Sergio Gor is known for his conservative credentials. His nomination has been closely watched in both Washington and New Delhi, given the weight the post carries at a time when both sides are focused on negotiating a trade deal.
The Donald Trump administration has imposed steep tariffs on India: a 25 per cent reciprocal duty on Indian goods along with an additional 25 per cent levy tied to New Delhi’s purchase of Russian oil. The combined 50 per cent tariff is among the highest in the world and comes as Donald Trump has repeatedly accused India of “fueling Russia’s deadly attacks on Ukraine" by continuing to buy discounted crude from Moscow, even as Washington has refrained from imposing harsher sanctions on Russia itself.
If confirmed by the Senate, Sergio Gor would become one of the youngest US ambassadors to India.
