A war of words took place between Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi over the latter’s remark on the India-US trade deal during his speech on Wednesday.

Rahul Gandhi alleged that the government “surrendered" to the US pressure. He then went on to make a series of sensational allegations that drew swift rebuttal from the government’s side and the Chair, which reminded him of the House rules, as the ruckus erupted in the House.

“I don’t believe that the government would sign such a deal unless there was some kind of pressure or leverage involved. Our farmers have been left to fend for themselves. The textile sector has been wiped out. Our energy security is being handed over," the Rae Bareli MP said.

Rijiju interjected Gandhi and said, “We are not disturbing Rahul Gandhi when you are levelling charges and wild allegations without any proof, which is not acceptable."

The minister also urged the Leader of Opposition to authenticate his allegations.

Jagdambika Pal, who was in the Chair, then ruled that Gandhi’s allegations would not go on the record of the Lok Sabha.

After the demand by the treasury bench, Rahul Gandhi said he wants to authenticate his remark.

However, Union Minister Pralhad Joshi then said the opposition leader should produce documents, backing his allegations.

Rahul Gandhi responded to the government’s demand, saying he has the papers to authenticate. “I will put the papers on the table also," he added.

Rijiju also said the opposition leader should follow due process to authenticate records.

“Whatever allegations you have made, despitethe ruling by the chair. You are the Leader of the Opposition. When you speak about certain things, they have serious connotations. I would urge the Leader of Opposition to authenticate all his points."

After Rahul Gandhi’s speech ended, Rijiju said no one can sell India and accused the Congress party of weakening the country. He asserted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is the strongest PM of India and said, “Congress is sad because India is progressing."
