India is a part of QUAD and is very important for the peace and stability of the Indo-Pacific, Taiwan deputy national security adviser (NSA) Hsu Szu-chien said in an unprecedented and exclusive conversation with CNN-News18.

“The India-Taiwan relationship has been okay," he said. “We have a representative in New Delhi. You have a good representative in Taipei."

Szu-chien, who is visiting India with a Taiwanese delegation, also spoke at this year’s Raisina Dialogue.

The economic relationship between the two nations is improving, said the official. “More companies from Taiwan are investing here not only in regular ICT (Information and Communications Technology) products but also semiconductors," he said.

There is greater continuity in foreign policy between Taiwan and India because of the same administration retaining power, Szu-chien said. “India is a part of QUAD and very important for peace and stability of Indo-Pacific. We see India as a partner," he said.

More investments, trade, and people-to-people exchange can boost the momentum of the relationship between the two nations, the Taiwanese official said.

“We have a very friendly relationship between our two peoples. There is no conflict of interest, but there are some challenges. There are certain hindrances, obstacles. The business community from Taiwan is not that familiar with the business environment in India," he said.

There is currently no trade deal between the two nations, pointed out Szu-chien. “We are thinking of more general trade agreements between the two countries," he added. “I hope there is a direct flight. After Covid, airplane companies rearranged flight routes and thus direct flights were cancelled. If anything our government can do, we will do our best to facilitate the resumption."

Szu-chien was part of a panel discussion on Stress Test: Treaties Face Moment Of Truth on Monday at the Raisina Dialogue.

“I have been at Raisina many times," he told News18. “I appreciate the arrangement made by ORF for my presence and our delegation. Our participation is significant for promoting mutual strategic understanding."
