India has sent a major consignment of diesel to Bangladesh as the country faces a fuel shortage following the West Asia war and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. The development comes amid improving bilateral relations after the return of the Bangladesh ist Party (BNP) in Bangladesh.
As per reports, 5,000 tonnes of diesel have been sent from India as part of the regular energy trade between the two countries. Bangladesh has been facing shortages of petrol and diesel due to disruptions in global oil supplies following the war in Iran.
What we know about the India-Bangladesh oil deal?
Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation Chairman Muhammad Rezanur Rahman confirmed the delivery and said the diesel was supplied under an existing agreement between the two countries.
“We have an agreement with India, and according to that agreement, India will supply 180,000 tonnes of diesel to Bangladesh each year via the pipeline. The 5,000 tonnes arriving now is part of that agreement," he told news agency, ANI.
He added that Bangladesh must import at least 90,000 tonnes within six months, and the current consignment is part of that target. Authorities expect the full amount for the six-month period to arrive within the next two months.
India supplies diesel to Bangladesh through the India-Bangladesh Friendship Pipeline, which was operationalised in 2017. The fuel is provided on a commercial basis from Numaligarh Refinery Limited.
Bangladesh has requested additional diesel supplies, but government sources in India said any decision will depend on fuel availability and market conditions. India has also assured that it is not facing a fuel shortage despite uncertainty in global energy markets.
Energy crisis in Bangladesh
Bangladesh has introduced strict measures to manage its fuel crisis. Public and private universities were closed starting Monday, and the government imposed daily limits on fuel sales after panic buying at petrol stations last week.
Iran war disrupts oil supply
The crisis comes as tensions rise in the Middle East. The United States said it destroyed 16 Iranian mine-laying vessels near the Strait of Hormuz after Iran threatened to block oil exports and prevent shipments to its enemies.
The strait carries about 20 per cent of the world’s oil, raising concerns about global supply. As the war entered its 11th day, both sides increased their rhetoric, with the US warning of stronger strikes while Iran launched new attacks against Israel and Gulf Arab countries.
