IndiGo on Sunday announced that it has cancelled its flight operations to Tbilisi and Almaty, adding that some services may make a refuelling stop at Doha on Monday due to developments related to Iran.
In a post on X, the airline said flights scheduled for January 25 between Delhi and Tbilisi in Georgia, and between Mumbai and Almaty in Kazakhstan, along with their return services, have been cancelled.
This comes as tensions between the United States and Iran have sharply increased following a violent crackdown on nationwide protests in Iran that reportedly left thousands dead and tens of thousands detained.
The unrest began on December 28 after Iran’s currency, the rial, plunged in value. What started as economic protests quickly spread across the country. Authorities responded with force, as Iran’s ruling system does not allow public dissent.
Former US president Donald Trump warned Tehran of serious consequences if it continued killing protesters or carried out mass executions of those arrested. In recent days, there have been no fresh protests reported. Trump also claimed that Iran had stopped executing around 800 detained protesters. Iran’s top prosecutor rejected the claim, calling it “completely false."
Despite this, Trump signalled that military options remain on the table. Speaking on Thursday, he said any future military action would make last June’s US strikes on Iranian nuclear sites “look like peanuts."
Amid rising tensions, the US Central Command announced on social media that Air Force F-15E Strike Eagle fighter jets are now operating in the Middle East. The command said the deployment “enhances combat readiness and promotes regional security and stability."
