Apple rolled out the Voice Memos, a go-to app for musicians of all kinds, to help them or podcasters capture tracks or save snippets of inspiration. Now, the company has enhanced the functionality of the app by introducing a new feature in it. The iOS 18.2 update allows iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max users to layer vocal tracks on top of existing instrumental recordings without the need for headphones.

Using this feature, iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max users will be able to play their original instrumental ideas through the iPhone speaker while recording vocals using the new studio-quality microphones simultaneously.

Powered by the advanced A18 Pro chip, the iPhone 16 Pro models use advanced processing and machine learning to isolate the vocal recording to create two individual tracks. These tracks can then be further mixed and refined in professional apps like Logic Pro.

In addition, layered recordings are automatically synced across devices with Voice Memos on Mac. For further editing, users can simply drag and drop their files into the Logic session.

The tech giant further informed that they have enabled users to incorporate a variety of background instrumentals, such as acoustic guitar or piano, as the first layer. Moreover, producers and artists can send an instrumental music mix as a compressed audio file directly to the Voice Memos app. This allows users to easily record vocal layers on top of them, wherever and whenever inspiration strikes.

In a recent collaboration, Grammy Award winners Michael Buble and singer Carly Pearce, along with Greg Wells, teamed up with Apple to bring their new track “Maybe This Christmas" to life using the iPhone 16 Pro and the Voice Memos app. In a BTS video published by Apple, the Grammy Award winners share the inspiration for their powerful holiday song and how the Voice Memos feature helped them record their vocals for this festive song on the iPhone 16 Pro.

As of now, the Layered Recordings capability for Voice Memos is exclusively available to the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max users. However, it is worth noting that this feature will be available for users running iOS 18.2. In addition to that, importing a Layered Recording and sharing it to Voice Memos is accessible on Logic Pro for Mac 11.1 with macOS Sequoia 15.2, as well as Logic Pro for iPad 2.1 with iPadOS 18.2.
