Elon Musk has changed a lot of things about the platform since he bought Twitter and rebranded to X and more of them are coming your way.
Stop using hashtags, is what Musk is telling you.
Elon Musk has changed the dynamics of Twitter, now called X, since he bought the company two years ago. The platform already has a slew of new features that includes video/audio calls, support for AI chatbot Grok and even post job listings.
Now, Musk is looking to make further changes to X and social media in general by stating the system doesn’t need hashtags and we should stop using them in our posts. Musk was responding to a query on the use of hashtags on X where Grok AI chatbot gave a detailed answer, as you can see here.
It is interesting to see Musk vouch for the opinion shared by the AI chatbot, which is running on a platform owned by the same person. So, effectively he doesn’t want people using hashtags, and he gives two reasons that are; the system doesn’t need them anymore, and they look ugly, as Musk mentioned in his post.
Hashtags have been around for years, and are seen as a vehicle to analyse what is trending on the social media platform. Adding these tags have enabled us to easily search for topics and posts on Twitter, now X. But Musk’s admission suggests the system at X no longer needs them to track the posts. He is likely to have engineered a new way to study the algorithm of the posts on X.
The Grok AI response clearly says, using hashtags is like a desperate cry into the void of the internet and trying too hard. And also mentions that hashtags are your ticket to nowhere. All these tell us the evolution in X post Musk’s focus on the platform and how his visibility on your feed has nothing to do with his urge to be seen everywhere, even if you don’t want to.
