Eligible users will be able to write background information or provide opinion-based insights to help people avoid falling for wrong content.
The Community Notes feature will be implemented in the US first.
Instagram is tipped to be working on implementing Community Notes on its platform. According to a tipster, the Meta-owned platform is adding a new option to write a community note to the published posts. The feature is currently under development and is not available to any user.
Recently, developer Alessandro Paluzzi shared about the feature in a Threads post. As per the post, the feature is reportedly at an advanced stage on Threads, where Community Notes is said to be already in the testing phase. Meta CEO highlighted the feature will be implemented in the US first, followed by the rest of the country.
In the screenshot shared on Threads, we can see that the feature can be accessed by tapping on the three vertical dots next to every post on Instagram. The option labelled “Write community note" is placed above the Report icon.
The company stated that Community Notes will allow users from diverse perspectives to give opinions on misleading content and provide additional context. Eligible users can write background information or provide opinion-based insights. If the community finds it useful, the information will be published under the post.
Explaining the decision to ditch the fact-checking program in a series of posts on Thread, Zuckerberg said, “It’s time to get back to our roots around free expression and giving people a voice on our platforms," adding that the content policies will be simplified. Restrictions on topics such as gender, immigration and others that are out of touch with mainstream discourse will be removed.
This leaked information comes weeks after Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the shutting down of the existing fact-checking program, citing rigid content policy and censorship mistakes. While the company has revealed the feature will be implemented on all of its social media platforms, it has not yet declared any release date.
Meanwhile, the Community Notes feature was first introduced by X (formerly Twitter) in 2021. Later, it was expanded and popularised after Elon Musk took over the company.
