The global AI battle is heating up this year and with the big move from Chinese AI startups now making the headlines, expect things to get feistier over the next few months. DeepSeek will obviously hog the limelight but in the AI space, this isn’t the only company to venture out of China and get everyone’s attention.

In fact, DeepSeek is just a tip of the AI iceberg that has been brewing in the country over the last few years. The high demand and traffic on DeepSeek means other Chinese startups will start popping up on the radar, and that includes giants like Alibaba, ByteDance and Tencent among others.

The Big AI Battle

While some might say OpenAI faces a big challenge from the likes of DeepSeek, there is a sense that we could be about to witness an AI battle among the Chinese contenders. Alibaba has unveiled its own AI model called Qwen 2.5 which may be a new version but it is obvious that all the DeepSeek hype and interest is now bringing more players into the mainstream fray.

Alibaba even claims that its new AI model can outperform GPT 4o, Llama from Meta and even the DeepSeek R1 model, which tells you how the stakes are already rising and the performance levels will only get better from here.

Secret’s Out

OpenAI has thrived on its stature, partnership with Microsoft and heavy funding to lead the race, with Google slowly closing in. But these Chinese startups have somehow shown up these US companies, by building AI models at a fraction of cost, and less powerful hardware in tow.

Granted, we don’t expect this trend to continue as the demand increases but they have shown the world that AI can run without damaging the environment. Most experts have talked about the level of AI development in China which is yet to explode and it seems DeepSeek might open the floodgates as the rest of the world watches their boom in envy and looks to match their moves in the near future.
