Iran’s Revolutionary Guards on Sunday said they have attacked the American aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln in the Gulf after US and Israeli strikes killed the country’s supreme leader.

“The US aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln was struck by four ballistic missiles," AFP quoted the Guards saying in a statement, warning that the “the land and sea will increasingly become the graveyard of the terrorist aggressors."

The USS Abraham Lincoln is one of the nuclear-powered aircraft carriers of the US, which the Navy calls “the largest warship in the world".

The carrier was sent to the Gulf in the end of January as part of what President Donald Trump called an “armada" which was moved to the region “just in case" as tensions spiked over Iran’s crackdown on those protesting about the country’s economy.

The statement by the Revolutionary Guards on Sunday said the armed forces have entered a “new phase" of military conflict and that operations on land and at sea will be intensified.

Meanwhile, the Pentagon has rejected the claims of USS Abraham Lincoln been hit by Iran. “The Lincoln was not hit. The missiles launched didn’t even come close. The Lincoln continues to launch aircraft in support of CENTCOM’s relentless campaign to defend the American people by eliminating threats from the Iranian regime," it said.

The Pentagon has also confirmed that three members of the US military were “killed in action" and five “seriously wounded" in the operation against Iran. These were the first casualties of any kind among the US personnel since the start of the operation. However, it did not provide further detail.
