Iranian officials too afraid to bury Ali Khamenei weeks after assassination: Report

The burial of Iran’s assassinated Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei remains undecided weeks after his death, with officials citing security concerns and logistical challenges, reported the New York Post.

Iranian authorities are reportedly weighing risks associated with holding a large public funeral, particularly the threat of potential Israeli strikes and the possibility of unrest during mass gatherings.

Behnam Taleblu of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies told the publication that the regime appears reluctant to proceed under current conditions.

“Simply put, the regime is too afraid and too weak to roll the dice,” he said, pointing to broader vulnerabilities faced by Tehran amid the conflict.

Khamenei, 86, was killed in a joint US-Israeli airstrike on February 28 that further triggered the ongoing conflict, but his remains have yet to be laid to rest – an unusual departure from established traditions in the Islamic Republic.

CONTRAST WITH 1989 FUNERAL

The delay stands in stark contrast to the massive state funeral held for Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini in 1989, when millions gathered in Tehran.

Observers note that similar public mobilisation has been largely absent following Khamenei’s death, with weeks of airstrikes and instability limiting large-scale displays of mourning.

Taleblu also pointed to concerns over internal dissent and information control, noting that the government may be wary of protests or counter-mobilisation during any public ceremony.

MASHHAD EMERGES AS POSSIBLE SITE

Iranian officials are reportedly considering Mashhad, Khamenei’s hometown in northeastern Iran, as a potential burial site. The city, which hosts the revered Imam Reza shrine, offers both symbolic importance and enhanced security infrastructure.

Plans under discussion include burying Khamenei near the shrine, where a heavy security presence could help safeguard the site.

PLANS SCRAPPED AMID WAR, TRUCE UNCERTAINTY

Initial plans for a three-day state funeral beginning March 4 were abandoned as large-scale US and Israeli strikes intensified, according to Iranian state media.

Officials later said the delay was partly due to expectations of an “unprecedented turnout”, though no date has since been finalised.

The uncertainty comes as a temporary truce between the US and Iran, signed on April 8, remains fragile and is set to expire this week, further complicating the timing of any major public ceremony.
