Israeli drone strike hits southern Lebanon a day after trilateral deal with US

An Israeli drone struck the Nabatiyeh area in southern Lebanon on Saturday, according to Lebanon's state news agency, a day after Israel and Lebanon formalised a US-brokered security arrangement aimed at reducing tensions along their shared border.

The strike has raised concerns that the newly announced agreement could come under strain even before its implementation. The Israel-Lebanon frontier has witnessed repeated exchanges of fire in recent months, with hostilities largely involving the Iran-backed Hezbollah group.

There was no immediate statement from the Israeli military on the reported drone strike, and the extent of damage or possible casualties was not immediately clear.

The security arrangement was announced on Friday following four days of US-mediated negotiations in Washington, DC. Speaking after the talks, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio described the agreement as an initial step towards broader efforts to stabilise the region.

"It’s the beginning of the beginning," Rubio said, while cautioning that significant challenges remain. "There’s a lot of work ahead. We don’t in any way underestimate the difficulty of the task ahead, but we understand the importance of it."

The negotiations brought together representatives from Israel and Lebanon, although Hezbollah was not a participant in the discussions.

LEBANON HOSTILITIES COMPLICATE DIPLOMATIC EFFORTS

The latest strike also comes amid wider regional tensions linked to the conflict involving Iran, Israel and the United States. Ongoing hostilities in Lebanon have complicated diplomatic efforts to preserve a ceasefire framework announced after the United States and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding on June 17 aimed at halting military operations across multiple fronts, including Lebanon.

Analysts warn that any renewed escalation along the Israel-Lebanon border could further undermine efforts to maintain regional stability.
