Israeli strikes hit tents sheltering displaced Palestinians in Muwasi and Gaza City, causing deaths and injuries. The attacks underscore mounting ceasefire tensions and fresh scrutiny over civilian safety in Gaza.
Israeli strikes in Gaza on Saturday killed two Palestinian siblings in the Muwasi camp in the south and wounded others in a separate strike in Gaza City, according to hospitals and rescue workers. The Israeli military said it had targeted Hamas militants in both incidents.
Nasser Hospital said the strike in Muwasi hit tents sheltering displaced Palestinians, killing 15-year-old Islam Moussa and her 30-year-old brother Abdullah Moussa, and wounding at least seven others. In western Gaza City, a strike on a tent sheltering displaced people wounded at least 12 people, according to Shifa Hospital, while the Palestinian Red Crescent Society said two of the injured were in a critical condition and most of those hurt were women.
The Israeli military acknowledged striking the Muwasi area and said it had targeted a Hamas militant, but did not immediately give more details. At Nasser Hospital, relatives wept over the bodies, which were covered in white burial shrouds.
Also on Saturday, Palestinians reported hearing a loud explosion in Gaza City. The Israeli military said it had struck a Hamas militant there and that it was not aware of uninvolved civilians being harmed. Strikes continued on Saturday evening in central Gaza, with no immediate word on casualties. The military said it was checking the reports.
Despite a fragile ceasefire reached in October that paused the heaviest fighting between Israel and Hamas, Israel has continued near-daily strikes and shelling across Gaza. Israel and Hamas have accused each other of violating the ceasefire. Israel says it is targeting Hamas and other militants who pose a threat and is acting in response to ceasefire violations.
Since the ceasefire took effect, more than 1,030 people have been killed in Gaza, according to Gaza's Health Ministry, which is part of the Hamas-led government. The ministry keeps detailed casualty records that United Nations agencies and independent experts generally consider reliable, though it does not separate civilians from militants. Last week, the ministry said more than 250 children had been killed in Gaza since the ceasefire began.
A team of independent experts commissioned by the United Nations has accused Israel of deliberately shooting children in Gaza and repeated an accusation that it has committed genocide in the territory. Israel has denied the genocide allegation. The war began on October 7, 2023, when a Hamas-led attack on southern Israel killed about 1,200 people and saw 251 taken hostage. Gaza's Health Ministry says Israel's offensive has killed more than 73,050 Palestinians, including those killed since the ceasefire.
Saturday's strikes in Muwasi, Gaza City and central Gaza came amid continuing exchanges over alleged ceasefire violations, with hospitals reporting deaths and injuries and the Israeli military saying it had targeted Hamas militants.
