A 29-year-old teacher at a Catholic nursery school in northern Italy was suspended after it was discovered she was working as an OnlyFans content creator in her spare time. Elena Maraga was placed on leave after a parent discovered her online content, which included raunchy material.
The parent recognised Maraga from the school and shared the information with other parents on social media. The matter was then brought to the school’s attention.
When Maraga was asked to delete her OnlyFans account, she refused. She argued that her actions outside of work did not harm anyone and stated that her teacher’s salary of 1,200 euros (£1,000) per month was not enough to sustain her. Maraga explained that she had turned to OnlyFans as a way to earn more money and said she was proud of her physical achievements, which she showcased on the platform.
Although Maraga’s behaviour was not aligned with the Catholic values of the school, several parents expressed their support for her work as a teacher, praising her dedication to the children.
Maraga, who holds a degree in Educational Sciences and has five years of experience as a teacher, revealed that she began exploring other career opportunities due to the financial challenges of her teaching job.
In an interview with a local media, the young teacher admitted that she earned more from her OnlyFans account in one day than she did in an entire month as a teacher.
“I love teaching children, it’s my calling," she noted, adding, “But I earn much more on the Internet. I opened OnlyFans a month ago, partly for fun, partly out of curiosity, partly to see if you could really earn money. In one day I get a month’s salary."
The case has gained national attention, with support from Italy’s largest trade union. Alvise Sponza, general secretary of the Cgil Flc of Treviso, stated that dismissing her would be unfair as her activities outside work are legal.
In response to the controversy, Italian Ministry of Education has also announced plans to introduce a new code of ethics to prevent teachers from appearing on such websites.
However, Maraga remains adamant that she should be allowed to continue her side business. She believes that adults should have the freedom to make their own choices in their private lives, and she insists that her work does no harm to anyone.
Maraga also mentioned that some parents at the school have expressed their support for her, and although she is not seeking a petition to avoid dismissal, she values the backing she has received.
“But there are some mothers who want to support me. They want me to continue teaching their children," she added.
