The Rajya Sabha on Friday addressed the alleged recovery of cash from the residence of a sitting judge of the Delhi High Court, with Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar promising to find a way to hold a structured discussion on the matter.
Congress MP Jairam Ramesh brought up the issue during the morning session, seeking the Chair’s stance on judicial accountability and reminding him about a pending impeachment notice for a judge of the Allahabad High Court.
“This morning, we learned about a shocking case involving a large amount of cash found at the residence of a judge of the Delhi High Court," Ramesh said. He also mentioned that 50 members of Parliament had previously submitted a notice to the chairman about remarks made by an Allahabad High Court judge.
Ramesh emphasised that the chairman had consistently highlighted the need for judicial accountability and urged Dhankhar to instruct the government to propose measures for enhancing it.

On the issue related to the alleged recovery of the cash, Dhankhar said what “bothers" him is that the incident happened but did not come to light immediately. He expressed concern over the delayed revelation of the incident, stating that if it had involved a politician, bureaucrat, or industrialist, the concerned person would have been immediately targeted. He assured that a transparent, accountable, and effective systemic response would follow.
The chairman also committed to consulting with the Leader of the House and the Leader of the Opposition to arrange a structured discussion during the session.
SC Initiates In-House Probe Against Justice Varma
In a late-night action, the Supreme Court Collegium in an emergency meeting on Thursday decided that Justice Yashwant Varma will be transferred – from the Delhi High Court back to Allahabad.
The Collegium’s decision reportedly came after a large amount of unaccounted cash was found in his official bungalow last week. The money was recovered from the official bungalow of Justice Yashwant Varma after a fire broke out at his residence on Tughlak Road.
The top court also initiated an in-house probe against Justice Yashwant Varma and has also sought a report from Delhi HC Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya.
Dhankhar Assures Action
On the impeachment matter raised in Rajya Sabha, Dhankhar mentioned receiving representation from 55 Rajya Sabha members. He confirmed taking steps to verify the signatures on the representation, with most members responding positively. He urged the remaining members to respond to the verification emails promptly.
“Therefore, most of the members have cooperated. Those members who have not done so far may please do it in response to the second mail sent to them. Then the process will not be delayed at my level, even for a moment," he said.
