Jaishankar, US Counterpart Rubio Meet For First Time After Trump’s India Tariff Onslaught

Union External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Kuala Lumpur on Monday on the sidelines of the ASEAN summit, marking their first meeting since US President Donald Trump imposed steep 50% tariffs on Indian imports.

“Glad to meet @SecRubio this morning in Kuala Lumpur. Appreciated the discussion on our bilateral ties as well as regional and global issues," Rubio said in a post on X.

Jaishankar earlier on Sunday met ASEAN chair, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, on the sidelines of the summit and conveyed to Anwar best wishes from his Indian counterpart Prime Minister Narendra Modi for holding a successful event.

“Honoured to meet Prime Minister @anwaribrahim of Malaysia. Conveyed the best wishes of Prime Minister @narendramodi for a successful ASEAN Summit," Jaishankar, who is in Kuala Lumpur to attend the annual Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit, posted on social media.

However, his meeting with Rubio comes in the backdrop of trade tensions between New Delhi and Washington. Earlier, Jaishankar’s fellow cabinet minister, Piyush Goyal, the Union Ministry for Commerce and Industry, said that India won’t rush into trade agreements or accept terms and conditions of trading partner countries in a manner that is inimical to the nation’s interests and hinders flexibility.
