A former taxi driver has been arrested on suspicion of drugging and raping a female passenger, with local media reporting that he may have sexually assaulted around 50 women.
According to Tokyo Police, the 54-year-old man allegedly drugged a woman in her 20s last year, causing her to lose consciousness. Traces of sleeping pills were reportedly detected in her hair, according to media reports.
“He got a woman, then in her 20s, to take sleeping pills which caused her to lose consciousness, took her to his home and committed an indecent act, which he filmed,” a police spokesperson was quoted as saying by news agency AFP.
The man has been arrested on suspicion of non-consensual sexual intercourse and violating laws related to the filming of sexual content.
Media outlets, including The Yomiuri Shimbun and Jiji Press, reported that investigators recovered approximately 3,000 videos and images from the man’s devices.
The footage, which allegedly shows him sexually assaulting women in his taxi or at his home, dates back to 2008.
The suspect had previously been arrested in October on suspicion of drugging another woman and stealing 40,000 yen (Rs 23,911) from her.
Authorities released him at the time but took him into custody again in December over an alleged indecent assault.
