Jay Bhattacharya, a Kolkata-born economist and Stanford University-trained physician is the presumptive favourite of US President-elect Donald Trump for the next director of the Institutes of Health (NIH), according to multiple media reports.
Bhattacharya called on Robert F. Kennedy Jr, who has been appointed by Trump to lead the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) this week, and impressed him with his ideas to overhaul the NIH, an agency that oversees biomedical research in the country, The Washington Post reported.
There were, however, no official comments from the Trump’s transition team.
The Indian-origin economist has batted for shifting the NIH’s focus towards extending more funds to innovative research and reducing the influence of some of its longest-serving career officials, the report added.
Kennedy was picked by Trump earlier this month to lead HHS, a top US health agency that oversees NIH and other health agencies.
