Veteran actor and BJP leader Joy Banerjee, 62, passed away on Monday at a private hospital near the bypass in Kolkata. He had been battling a long-standing respiratory illness and diabetes, with his condition worsening in the past few days.

Joy Banerjee, born on May 23, 1963, achieved significant success in the film industry before venturing into politics. He contested the 2014 Lok Sabha elections on a BJP ticket from Birbhum, facing off against current MP and Tollywood actress Shatabdi Roy.

In 2019, he ran as a BJP candidate against Trinamool MP Sajda Ahmed from Uluberia. Despite announcing his departure from the BJP in November 2021, he remained a member of the party’s state committee.

Following his death, party workers visited the hospital to pay their respects. Joy Banerjee was the former husband of Trinamool councillor Anan Banerjee.

Joy Banerjee began his film career with Nimalur Banabas (1982), directed by Bidesh Sarkar, where he starred opposite Debashree Roy. He received critical acclaim for his performance in Chopper (1987), directed by Nabyendu Chatterjee, and later appeared in Hirak Jayanti (1990), which became a major box office success.
