A week before the presidential debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump, a 2020 questionnaire was uncovered by CNN which highlighted Harris’s support for gender transition surgeries for detained immigrants and federal prisoners paid for by taxpayer money. The recovered questionnaire has become a talking point in the run-up to the 2024 US presidential elections, especially among right-wing supporters who have used it to target Harris for her radical views.

The questionnaire was provided to Harris during her 2020 vice presidential run by the civil rights group American Civil Liberties Union.

In the questionnaire, Harris wrote that she supported taxpayer funding of gender transition surgeries for detained immigrants and federal prisoners. She also supported other left-wing causes, such as decriminalising federal drug possession for personal use, drastic cuts in ICE funding and an open-ended pledge to “end” immigration detention, according to CNN.

Four years later, as she attempts to gain access to one of the most powerful political offices in the world, her 2020 choices are being highlighted and attacked by right-wing supporters.

Elon Musk, too, retweeted an interview clip highlighting Harris’s stance.

It remains unknown whether Harris still holds the same views on the issue. On being questioned on it by CNN, her campaign only provided a statement noting: ““The Vice President’s positions have been shaped by three years of effective governance as part of the Biden-Harris Administration.”

Harris has spoken about gender issues multiple times throughout her career.

During her tenure as a California Senator, according to the New York Post, Harris had said that if elected president she would use her executive power to ensure transgender and non-binary individuals “including those in prison and immigration detention” get access to “all necessary surgical care.”

As the attorney general of the state, she campaigned strongly for the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation to offer transgender surgeries to inmates.

Harris’s stance now remains ambiguous. Whether she still favours radical policies to promote gender rights or whether her stance on the issue has softened remains to be seen.
