With months left for the Kerala Assembly elections, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday criticised the communist government in the state and said India must move away from communist ideology. He said Kerala would soon see change.

‘Communist ideology symbol of destruction’

Speaking at an event organised by Organiser titled ‘Chhattisgarh@25: Shifting The Lens’, the Union Home Minister said the government intends to completely eliminate Maoist influence and urged people to recognise what he described as the damaging effects of communist ideology.

According to him, regions under communist rule have lagged in development. He also alleged that, in the name of tribal welfare, people were pushed towards armed activity, calling the ideology destructive in nature.

Shah said, “We will uproot the Maoist problem from its roots. But the public of this country must understand this ideology. Wherever communist rule has existed, development has failed to take place. In the name of tribal welfare, people were instead handed weapons. This ideology itself is a symbol of destruction."

He added that communists barely exist today. “Today, communists have to be searched for with a telescope- they barely exist anymore. Only Kerala remains, and this time that too will come to an end. The people themselves will do it. The people of Thiruvananthapuram have already begun," he said.

Shun violence: Shah to Maoists

Shah also appealed to Maoists to surrender and said the government would welcome them. He said the country needs to get rid of the “destructive" communist ideology at the earliest.
