Kyrie Irving injured his knee in the Mavericks' loss to the Kings, contributing to Dallas' increasing injury issues. The loss was deemed "unlucky" by coach Jason Kidd, but the likes of Luka Don ić and Toni Kroos came out in his support.

The Dallas Mavericks’ injury troubles worsened on Monday night when star guard Kyrie Irving suffered a knee injury. During a drive to the basket in the first quarter, Irving seemed to hyper-extend his left knee. Despite making two free throws after the play, Irving had to leave the game, finishing with just 7 points, as the Mavericks fell 122-98 to the Sacramento Kings.
Mavericks coach Jason Kidd expressed his frustration after the game:
“It’s unlucky. I hope that he’s healthy and it’s not serious. But the injuries that we’ve had this season... every time we get close to getting somebody back, someone goes down. Tonight, both (Jaden) Hardy and Ky go down, so we’re running out of bodies here. But guys keep fighting.”
The injury list continues to grow for Dallas. They are playing without their key players like Jaden Hardy (right ankle sprain), P.J. Washington Jr. (right ankle sprain), Daniel Gafford (right knee sprain), Anthony Davis (left adductor strain), Caleb Martin (right hip strain), and Dereck Lively II (right ankle stress fracture). With these setbacks, the Mavericks now sit at 32-30 and are fighting for a postseason spot.
Fans and stars react
Social media erupted with reactions. Luka DončiÄ shared on his Instagram story: “Kyrie stayed in to shoot two free throws after injury.”
Former Real Madrid star Toni Kroos, as a supporter of Mavericks, posted on X, “Come on @kyrieirving”
Even former NFL player Russell Okung commented, “That moment at the free throw line tells you everything about who Kyrie Irving is as a competitor.”
Former NFL star Robert Griffin praised Irving’s resilience, calling his effort “the definition of guts and toughness.”
Other fans also reacted to Irving’s injury:
Growing problem for Mavericks
The injury woes come at a critical time as Dallas battles for a playoff spot. The team trails the 6th-place Golden State Warriors by just 1½ games and is 3½ games ahead of the Phoenix Suns for the final Play-In spot. With another tough game against the Sacramento Kings at American Airlines Center at 8:30 p.m. ET, the Mavericks must rally their remaining players if they hope to turn their season around.
