Linda Yaccarino announced that she is stepping down as CEO of X (formerly Twitter), nearly two years after taking the reins of the platform once known as Twitter. In a statement posted on X, Linda Yaccarino described the role as “the opportunity of a lifetime" and expressed deep gratitude to Elon Musk for entrusting her with the job of transforming the platform.

“After two incredible years, I’ve decided to step down as CEO of ????," Linda Yaccarino wrote, adding, “When @elonmusk and I first spoke of his vision for X, I knew it would be the opportunity of a lifetime to carry out the extraordinary mission of this company."

Linda Yaccarino was hired by Elon Musk in 2023, making her the first permanent CEO appointed after his $44 billion takeover of the company in late 2022. A seasoned media executive and former head of advertising at NBCUniversal, she was brought in to help stabilize X’s advertising business and steer the platform toward Elon Musk’s ambitious vision of an “Everything App."

In her farewell post, Linda Yaccarino credited the X team for executing a “historic business turnaround", citing key efforts such as improving user safety, rebuilding advertiser trust, launching Community Notes and preparing to roll out a payments platform known as “X Money."

“This team has worked relentlessly," she said, continuing, “from groundbreaking innovations like Community Notes, and, soon, X Money, to bringing the most iconic voices and content to the platform."

Linda Yaccarino also emphasized the platform’s evolving identity under Elon Musk and its recent integration with xAI, Musk’s artificial intelligence company.

“Now, the best is yet to come as X enters a new chapter with @xai," she added.

X has undergone significant changes during Linda Yaccarino’s tenure, including legal battles with advertising coalitions, a controversial push for looser content moderation and new creator partnerships with public figures like Serena and Venus Williams.

Linda Yaccarino positioned X as “the world’s most powerful culture signal" and thanked users, business partners and the internal team for supporting the company’s transformation.

“X is truly a digital town square for all voices," she said, adding, “We couldn’t have achieved that without the support of our users, business partners, and the most innovative team in the world."

She ended her statement with a nod to her continued engagement with the platform, saying, “I’ll be cheering you all on as you continue to change the world. As always, I’ll see you on X."

The company has yet to announce her replacement.
